Websites - why should I pay a designer?

Your business needs a website. If you haven't figured that out by now, then you're in trouble.

But, what many business owner's don't realize is: your business needs an actual web designer/web master for your business website. Hang with me as I share a few points to back this up.

1. Your Website Is The Face Of Your Business

An article at Forbes.com said "This said, if you have abad website it is better to have no website. While no website equals missed opportunities, a bad website can actually be worse since it literally makes your business look bad." Your website shows customers who you are. If they have never done business with you, it is all they have to go on.

2. Your Website Needs To Be Current

More times than I can count, I've heard people tell me that their website needs to be updated - employee pictures that quit, products they no long offer, wrong prices(!), etc. What all these low price/no price website companies don't get is - your business changes, your website should change with it. Do you have someone who cuts your hair or does your nails? Then you should have someone who takes care of your company's face.

3. Security

Many website builders these days, especially WordPress sites, need to focus on security. More and more, hackers are targeting legitimate business websites.

A few years ago, I offered to build a website for a lady who ran a phonebook company and an associted local portal website. She said she wasn't ready to invest in a webmaster or a redesign. A few months later she was hacked, by some Muslim extremist hackers from Malaysia. Her website went from a decent resource for tourists and locals to "Death to Infidels!" overnight! She didn't find out about it for 2 weeks. In the end, her website was like that for almost a month!

Everyone gets hacked from time to time. And if you have someone managing your website it shouldn't be a big issue.

4. Everyone makes mistakes

When you hire a webdesigner, you should be hiring someone who is an expert at what they do. For them, it should be their main thing - their fulltime job. Experts make less mistakes and spend less time doing whatever they are an expert at than non-experts.

What is the value of your time as a business owner? Take how much you made (gross) last year. Divide that by the amount of hours you worked. Now you have a rough estimate of what an hour of your day is worth. Financially it makes more sense to hire an expert than it would cost your business in your time and headaches - even if the experts hourly rate is equal to yours. The guy I pay to cut my yard does it in less than an hour. It takes me half a day.

5. Most Important

Your website is one of your most important marketing tools. Do you really want to leave that to the lowest cost solution? It is time to quit seeing your website as something that needs to be done, and start seeing it as a living extension of your business that needs to be cultivated and maintained.

Your website is an investment. And if you have the right person/people designing it and managing it - it will yield the greatest returns.
